Ode to the Amherst Moose
The Amherst moose wanders in the morning mist
Having marked off the places on his list
From the top of Mack Hill to Ponemah bog
He has travelled far through the fog
As he stops alone upon the road
Feeling the weight of his load
A solemn figure hoping to pass
Pausing only to eat the grass
He reflects upon his yearly journey
Knowing he is hardly worthy
To tread upon the fallen brave
Who lie forgotten in their grave
For the sons of liberty lay beneath his feet
In the Village just off Main Street
Their markers worn thin by acid rain
Slowly erasing all the pain
Of battles fought in far away fields
Having fallen beneath their shields
Each having given their all
The moose pauses standing tall
Knowing those who came before
Travelled far from distant shore
So those who come after
Can enjoy a day of laughter
Carefree at the sight
Watching the lumbering plight
Of the Amherst moose wandering by
Not seeing the tear in his eye
For those silent voices
He yearly rejoices
This Veterans Day just like the last
He has paused to remember the past
And continues now upon his way
Secure in the knowledge that this day
The Amherst fallen will be not be forgot
By those who place a flag they bought
Upon the graves of all those who gave
Before they rested in their grave.
