The Roses Died
There use to be sweet scented roses
climbing the rugged alabaster wall.
Standing there beside me
your eyes flickered with desire.
Your essence smelled like
soft wind, tinted with roses.
Our hearts intertwined,
love bloomed with endless possibilities.
Over the years the neglected roses died.
They lost their will to climb
over the steep scared wall.
Wild violets filled in the spaces.
The shadows descended,
root rot evaded our love.
I tried as the sunlight disappeared
to hold onto you
with the limp branches of my soul.
I wonder how we stood every morning
whispering promises of loving tomorrows
while the roses died and the violets invaded.
They knew I would dance alone beside
that fragmented wall one day.
Did you?
