My Two Little Boys
Patti Woosley 1957 (WV)
Two little boys asked their mom as they went out to play,
"What adventures can we find outside in our backyard today?"
While looking for bugs and frogs and such,
they stomped on a hill of ants.
They jumped around and hollered,
“Mommy! They’re crawling up our pants!”
They watched a tiny camellia, change from brown to green.
They picked it up, and then declared,
"That’s the coolest thing we’ve ever seen!”
They climbed up in the tallest tree,
and spied a Robin's nest.
They saw baby birds with wide-opened mouths,
waiting to be fed.
They sat there in the old oak tree,
feeling like mighty kings.
They jumped to the ground,
looked around and asked,
"Please, Mom, can we stay and explore more things?”
They blew fuzzy dandelions,
while running in a meadow.
They closed their eyes and made a wish
to find some valued treasure.
They found shiny pieces of broken glass
and showed Mom their reflection.
They pocketed a couple smooth, gray rocks
to save for their collection.
They wandered onto a vacant lot,
and saw baby squirrels lying on the ground.
They searched the bushes and the trees,
but Mama Squirrel was nowhere to be found.
They gently played with the squirrels awhile.
It brought them so much pleasure.
Then, Mom wrapped them snugly inside their shirts,
and they ran home to share their treasure.
They were thrilled to have those baby squirrels
to feed and to nurture.
They fed them milk until they grew strong,
then released them back to Mother Nature.
Such exciting days we had back then,
filled with treasures, new pets and toys.
Thank you God for days I shared long ago,
with my two adventurous little boys.
