Laurels
cannot speak
but they can rustle
in the wind;

laurels
cannot fawn
but they seduce
with perfume;

laurels
cannot teach
but they abide
the desert clime.

I can't help but be reminded of a quote from "Out of Africa"

From A SHROPSHIRE LAD: XIX TO AN ATHLETE DYING YOUNG by A. E. Housman (1859-1936).

"The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high...
Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose...

Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man...

And round that early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl's."

Now each time I hear the word "laurel" I am brought back instantly to that scene.

I like your poem very much, fogglethorpe. I don't feel that I have anything to add that would be of service to you, but I couldn't help but share my initial reaction. I hope you didn't mind too much.

Doris..I don't mind at all. That's a great passage.

And it's true about the flowers..they are magnificent and very fragrant for only a short time.

The foliage in AZ is a great source of inspiration to me.

Thanks for sharing that.

Where in Arizona do you live? I love hiking around the Tucson area with friends. The National Forest there is amazing.

I live in Surprise, just northwest of Phoenix.

I have been to Tucson a lot of times. Oro Valley is nice.

What kind of laurels do you have there? Do they have color? I like how as a kid I would stick them to the tips of my fingers. You have brought back many memories with this poem. Thank you.

Oh, one last thing, to live in Surprise seems to be the best way to live.

They are Texas Mountain Laurels. Orchid colored flowers appear in early spring and last a few weeks. The aroma is strong and very appealing, like perfume. Then the flowers are gone, but the leaves stay green all year.

I have two such trees in my back yard.

The town of Surprise is a suburb, but a little more open than some of the others in this valley. I love the name too..AZ has some oddly named towns..Defiance, Chloride, Bagdad, Goodyear..I'm sure there is a history to all of them.
