Analysis of At The Altar
John Jessup Kennan 1953 (Pomona)
Tongues of flame sizzle against flesh
Lick and flicker ravenously
Her spirit gentle as the breath
Of a shadow on the sea
From a fog, a smoky whisper
In the ear, a kiss from a dove
Sweet scents of senses, smoke ascends
Spirits rise from flames of love
Am I your soul's burning desire,
Or am I just another freak?
Are you my only own true love,
Or just the Goddess of the Week?
I sacrifice me on my knees,
Eager to please, pray please, just to see ya,
Charred remains of burnt offerings
On the altar of the Goddess Maria
Wingless tributes, twisted wreckage;
Hear the howl as sirens sing
Broken angels scattered in pieces,
The despair of prayer on the wing
With crossbows around the bonfire
Dining upon fine fragile wings
Plucked from angels in mid-flight
Godlings snack to the crackling
Am I your soul's burning desire,
Or am I just another freak?
Are you my only own true love,
Or just the Goddess of the Week?
I sacrifice me on my knees,
Eager to please, pray please, just to see ya,
Charred remains of burnt offerings
On the altar of the Goddess Maria
A witches' brew is angel stew
Chicken soup for the tortured soul
Angel stew is a witches' brew
Chicken soup for the twisted soul
Consume this flesh, Ave Maria
The feast delivers me to your needs
Baptism by cleansing fire this
Disease which brings me to your knees
Ceremonial blood sprinkled in service
Cleanses within all which is sick
Served up to you, a sacrament
Little heart samples on toothpicks
Am I your soul's burning desire,
Or am I just another freak?
Are you my only own true love,
Or just the Goddess of the Week?
I sacrifice me on my knees,
Eager to please, pray please, just to see ya,
Charred remains of burnt offerings
On the altar of the Goddess Maria
Our Lady of the Condescension
Whisper as a wispy dove
Spirits rise from the friendly fire
Smoke from ash on altar of love
Tongues of flame sizzle against flesh
Lick and flicker ravenously
Her spirit gentle as the breath
Of a shadow on the sea...
