Analysis of My Morning Thoughts
I wake up warm in a nice soft bed,
With a solid shelter above my head.
My pantry is stocked with all I need.
I have water to drink and books to read.
I can walk freely in air that is pure,
Breathing in deeply as I watch the deer.
As mountains and stream greet my glad eye,
I’m blessed with the beauty of both earth and sky.
I live my life doing just as I please,
But when watching the world, I feel unease.
For not all the people are so blessed as me
As the greed of a few will not let it be.
War rages and robs, wounds, and deprives
Ordinary people of their homes and their lives.
Their freedom is gone, and lives taken too,
Thirsting and starving, and nothing they can do.
I wish I could give them my warm, soft bed,
A protecting shelter to cover their head,
Share with them bountiful fresh food and water
Restore to life each dead son and daughter.
I feel so helpless and that’s why I cry.
At the injustice, I want to yell, “Why?”
I’m also aware that my home and more
Will feel the effects of this unholy war.
Countries all over the world are impacted,
While laws here at home are being enacted,
So, if the aggressor and his champions have won,
The assault on my freedom has already begun.
In this world we are all of us sister and brother
War, when it’s heaped on each father and mother,
Is not something happening just far, far away,
But marching with vengeance toward my door today.

About this poem
I have been unable to come up with an apt title for this poem, but it's what I was thinking as I woke up one recent morning. I am appalled with the assault on Ukraine. I feel so sorry for the people of that country and for its president. But I know it's not an attack on one country only. The world will suffer and is suffering. It is unpublished, except for being posted on my personal Facebook page and one Facebook Group where it has had over four hundred responses. I hope that doesn't not disqualify it. more »
