Analysis of The Midnight Moon

Anusha Lal 1996 (Ranchi)

Once on foggy midnight,

I was all devoid of sleep.

I spent hours leaning against a wall,

beholding the sky above, so deep.

And what fascinated me the most,

was the solitary moon there.

And its solitude reflected mine,

as my despair reflected in its glare.

I witnessed the moon had to fight,

to shine in the dark and stormy night.

The moon still illuminates,

invades all darkness with pride.

Though cloud blocked its way of light,

and the moon momentarily hides.

But appears again, conquering the cloud,

It claimed its victory howling aloud.

And hence there was thunder in the sky,

The poor cloud then began to cry.

It brought drizzle and then a heavy downpour.

And I had to rush inside the door.

Rains disrupted my sheer delight,

And the moon was left alone the whole night.

About this poem

The moon has always fascinated me; its picturesque beauty, gentle brightness, and eye-catching attraction always hold my attention. I sometimes watch the moon sitting idle when I lack sleep. The moon there diminishes the night's dense darkness; from childhood, I was very fond of my ‘Chanda mama’ like every other child. Every Indian must have their acquaintance with the Chanda mama, the name mothers have given to the moon in fairy tales they used to narrate to their children to make them sleep. Moon’s beauty is epic, incomparable. One moon, many untold stories yet to reveal. The Midnight Moon is one such story. An attempt to bring alive the lifeless moon.

Anusha Lal

It’s me Anusha. One day I hope and pray I get to hear, “We don’t need that introduction”. Writing for me is like ‘the first cup of morning tea’, which keeps me awake through the mundane day; It’s my soul. Something that I was longing to do is to be read or heard! I am a poet first and an engineer later, one by passion and another by choice. Mysterious is what people call me, but here I am trying to unfurl some of the mysteries through my poetries. I always say, “My writing may not be an art of perfection, but it speaks whatever I cannot.” more…
