About this poem
I first wrote this poem while deployed to Iraq in the winter of 2005. It was my second deployment as a Marine Corps radio technician, and at this point, I had spent nearly 11 months on the receiving end of weekly rocket and mortar attacks. In the throes of an existential crisis, I wanted nothing more than to be in the comfort of my home.
