Analysis of The Woman Who Truly Loved Him

Another goddamn morning,
Head throbbing, dread hanging heavy,
The weight of life on his crooked spine,
Thirsty for whiskey, the demon's levy.

Alcohol is his only friend,
The numbness that stops the pain,
Yet he knows it's killing him slow,
But he'll drink until his last day.

And then there's her,
The one he doesn't deserve,
But she stays, hiding her tears,
As she hangs on to his words.

She slathers on her makeup,
She's bought brand new lace,
But he's too lost in his own lies,
Too drunk to see her face.

He's a burden, a goddamn load,
A curse from which she can't flee,
But she wipes the tears from his eyes,
And tells him she'll never leave.

She ain't fooled, sees right through,
His tough guy act and fake smiles,
But she sticks with him despite it all,
His anchor in life's crazy miles.

So he soldiers on, each day anew,
Holding onto her love with all he's got,
Hoping he'll someday be free,
Of the booze and all his damn rot.

Joe Strickland

I'm just a regular, blue collar, working stiff who took an interest in writing poetry many years ago but until recently I haven't had a desire to share any with anyone or pursue publication. I'm an unpublished fork lift operator by night, and a day drinker by choice. I can be followed on Twitter @JoeStricklandSC more…
