Analysis of The Curtain Of Mortality
Joe Strickland 1986 (Hobbysville, SC)
The curtain of mortality
falls on us all,
a final act we cannot escape.
Yet we do not use this knowledge
to weave the threads of love tighter.
Instead, the trivialities of life take centre stage.
We hunger for
status,
possessions,
looks,
trying to find significance in the insignificant.
We are consumed by our fears,
crushed by our dread of the inevitable end.
We carve ourselves
into flat caricatures of ourselves,
denying the magnificent facets
of humanity
that make us whole.
We let nothing eat us up,
the mundane
and pointless ruling our lives.
And in doing so,
we forget the connection between us,
the powerful sparks
of human connection
that make life worth living.
If only we could let go
of our small hearts,
embrace each other's differences,
and remember
The beauty of the world,
even in its darkest moments.
If only
we could love each other more,
forgive more easily,
and live each day
with purpose and intention.
The goddamn circus that is life
turns and twists,
but its essence is a story of love,
hope,
fear,
and loss.
We may all be headed
towards the same finale,
but let us not forget the beauty
that we can create along the way.
Let us be kind,
compassionate,
and let our love
Outshine the darkness.
