Analysis of The Journey
The journey was still
fresh in her mind
After the incessant
ubiquitous
madness of the city
where she lived, worked
& occasionally had time to breathe
The sweet scent of orange blossoms
had surrounded her
in the vast depths
of the Southern California
citrus orchards
which had been such a far cry
from the valley in which she now lived
Not so many years ago
it too was filled with springtime blossoms
but the valley had been raped
conquered
dominated
its spirit broken
and it was, in all likelihood,
only a matter of time
until all the blossoms
would become memories
unreal visions from the past
or special effects on a movie screen
in a world which was so sadly and rapidly
losing all hope, charm, & grace
destined to be plowed under
& trampled into the dust
but for now
the journey was still fresh in her mind
as the soothing aromatic reality
of all the thousands of blossoms
slowly faded from her
wafting away
sliding into a nostalgia
which might never be recalled
Changes in the air
a new scent permeates
the unstable atmosphere
as it swirls & eddies
carrying the same message
to everyone :
"The jig is up"

I see Mercury rising
was it a shadow behind the thermometer
on the wall
of that nearby fellow traveler
winged Mercury
following his celestial course
