Analysis of The Drunkened Devil

In the clandestine corners of the barroom,
Where the dark-desired souls
Gather amidst the haze
Of smoke and their own
Broken reflections,
A drunkened devil lurks.
A tempter draped
In the shredded garb
Of debauchery,
His lips stained
With the sour taste
Of sin,
He prowls
With a carnal hunger
In eyes that burn
With an infernal fire,
Beckoning unto the lost
And lonely.

His footsteps echo
With a mocking cadence,
Like whispered prayers
Of the damned.
And in his wake,
He leaves a trail
Of destruction,
Shattered dreams
And fractured hearts,
While the chorus
Of the wretched harmonizes
With their lamentation.
His aura is potent,
A heady concoction
Of seduction
And damnation,
Reeking of spilled whiskey
And bourbon.
The scent draws
Vultures of temptation,
Circling like a congregation
Seeking absolution
In the fleshly sanctuary.

He dances with the harlots
And the saints,
An unholy union
Where boundaries blur
And souls intertwine
In a wicked ballet.
They writhe
And writhe,
Adrift in an orgiastic ritual
Where sin and salvation
Blend into one,
Carnal triumph.
A symphony of moans crescendos
Through the dimly lit chamber,
A sweet serenade
To the ears
Of the drunkened devil,
Whose eyes glimmer
With twisted delight.

He toys with their desires,
Spinning webs
Of tangled lust
That ensnare
The righteous
And the forsaken alike.
His words drip
Like honey,
Dripping upon
The parched lips
Of the seekers,
Promising fleeting ecstasy
In exchange
For a piece
Of their dwindling souls.
They willingly surrender,
Their hearts heavy
With longing
And the burden
Of their sins,
Hoping to find absolution
Amidst the chaos
Of the sinful embrace.

Rampant desires
Consume the room,
Fueling the debauchery
That dances
To the rhythm
Of the night.
Bodies collide
With reckless abandon,
Every touch a testament
To their audacity.
No salvation
Can be found
In these acts,
For they are born
Of flames
Rather than holy grace.
Yet, in the depths
Of their ecstasy,
Redemption hovers,
A fleeting glimmer
Amidst the darkness.

And as dawn breaks,
The drunkened devil
Fades into the mist,
Slipping away
Like a phantom
From the congregation's grasp.
Leaving behind
A congregation
Lost and disoriented,
Their whispers forever
Tainted with the trace
Of his intoxicating presence.
He is but a temporary orchestrator
Of chaos,
A pied piper
Who entrances
The wayward souls,
Only to vanish
With the night,
Leaving them alone
With the echoes
Of their misplaced desires.

Thus, the drunkened devil
Continues his dance,
Eternally seductive
And eternally longing.
In the twilight of existence,
He revels
In the fragile dichotomy
Between damnation
And salvation,
Aware that it is through
Their intertwined embrace
That one can fully
Appreciate the other.
And so, he roams,
A drunken siren
For the desolate hearts,
Forever reminding them
That heaven and hell
Are but different shades
Of the same divine madness.

Joe Strickland

I'm just a regular, blue collar, working stiff who took an interest in writing poetry many years ago but until recently I haven't had a desire to share any with anyone or pursue publication. I'm an unpublished fork lift operator by night, and a day drinker by choice. I can be followed on Twitter @JoeStricklandSC more…
