Analysis of Self-Care

Sarah Brower 1995 (New Jersey)

Feeding the heart
starving the brain
loosing oneself in bubbles popped

Rivers of Brandy
dreams of Champaign
coating cracks of glass

Devils food frosting memories
melting away all consciousness
carried away by thin blood streams

Exhaling termites of exteriors
sharply inhaling stings of what’s real
awakened from a slumber of beauty

Tornados dance within the mind
visions of danger ignite fatal sparks
one’s stomach cramps to the floor

Doors left unlocked
windows left open
monsters easily invade

Attacking with falsehoods
pointing barrels of insults
clothing the core with self loathing

Spit in the eye of distortions
confine to a headlock
wringing its neck

Standing over its lifeless shadows
its pieces melt in the urn
tightening solid the lid

Time to lock the doors
board up the windows
shielding the life you own

About this poem

Self care isn’t all about the spa days, or the treats. Sometimes it’s facing your demons. Facing the reality that things are not okay. Sometimes it’s being there for yourself and encouraging yourself to feel as well as heal.
