Analysis of The Finality of Forever
The Finality of Forever
Creatures, things, and ways of life
Become extinct so rapidly today
We have no time to form attachments,
Nor contemplate the finality of forever.
Our sense of security has been pulled
From under us so many times we can’t connect
Anymore, we can’t feel good about a life
That seems to be getting away from us.
Man no longer loves life, not even his own;
In trying to perfect his world he has lost
His capacity to enjoy it, to embrace it tenderly,
To appreciate that which he cannot duplicate.
He tries to substitute scientific technique
For a humble, grateful heart that cares,
And large impersonal bureaucratic programs
For a generous spirit and an open hand.
Those endangered species and bygone days
Will not be back this way again: surely
We will miss them and the unique goodness
Each one contributed to the wholeness of life.

About this poem
This is about reverence for life, It is, after all, God's creation. Also, a respect for the world we have inherited and gratitude toward the ancestors who built it for us and bequeathed it to us. We have no right to simply abuse and discard it. Or to thoughtlessly replace aspects of it simply because we've come up with something 'new and improved'. May be better. Then again, it may not be.
