Analysis of Once More Lively

Once More Lively

Taking time out to care for my mom
I made a choice to put my own life
Aside and tend to the one
Who brought me into this world
The only person around
Caring enough to help me
Back on my feet again
Now needs my two hands
To lift her up once more.

Old age isn’t advertised as kind
Things mom did so well alone
Now require walker wheels
Medicine, doctors and nurses
Her bed is her refuge
The television her window
Her voice slurs more
But my ears are her friends
So I listen for her call.

Strokes, surgeries and hospitals
Make it hard to get around
But mom is a fighter
Who passes her spirit on
Through my heart and eyes
And the food we share
Time comes with no guarantee
Waking up to breathe says
Get up once more lively.
