Analysis of Le Mauvais Œil

Maurice Rollinat 1846 (Châteauroux) – 1903 (Ivry-sur-Seine)

Le mauvais œil me persécute :
Un œil où le blâme reluit,
Où la haine se répercute,
Fixe et vitreux comme celui
Du condamné qu’on exécute.

Sans que jamais il se rebute,
Il me précède ou me poursuit,
Où que j’aille, où que mon pied bute,
      Le mauvais œil !

Et je suis tellement en butte
À cet œil jaune qui me nuit
Que je le vois même la nuit ;
Et dompteur dont je suis la brute,
Dans l’ombre il me vrille et me scrute,
      Le mauvais œil !
