Analysis of Le Somnambule

Maurice Rollinat 1846 (Châteauroux) – 1903 (Ivry-sur-Seine)



Le chapeau sur la tête et la canne à la main,
Serrant dans un frac noir sa rigide ossature,
Il allait et venait au bord de la toiture,
D’un air automatique et d’un pas surhumain.

Singulier promeneur, spectre et caricature,
Sans cesse, il refaisait son terrible chemin.
Sur le ciel orageux, couleur de parchemin,
Il dessinait sa haute et funèbre stature.

Soudain, à la lueur d’un éclair infernal,
Comme il frisait le vide en rasant le chenal
Avec le pied danseur et vif d’un funambule,

L’horreur emplit mon être et figea tout mon sang,
Car un grand chat d’ébène hydrophobe et grinçant
Venait de réveiller le monsieur Somnambule.
