Analysis of Waka

We move forward but can look back,
Remember times when under attack,
Aotearoa-Landof the Long White cloud,
European and Maori with both races proud.

The frightening experience of warrior canoes,
Three or more and fierce looking crews,
Another invasion from across the sea,
Enough to unnerve both you and me.

It seems historic those generations of old,
Even the stories how often they're told,
Sailing up the harbour just after dawn,
There was no respite for tired bodies worn.

Those seeking power and desire to rule,
Mixed with bravado and the half drunken fool,
Only a minority that upset a tribe,
Or some scandalising to tempt or bribe.

Waters are calmer most anxiety behind,
Faded into antiquity what was formerly defined,
We're more civilised it's harmony we seek,
Kiwi's are New Zealanders one language we speak.

This poem symbolises the present and past,
Reflects on the future all that we ask,
Men and women of every race and creed,

Let's pull together that is our need.

stan brierly

I have been writing poems for forty years and written about all sorts of things. Somehow I get creating streaks and can write up to 4 or 5 poems at once of varying subjects. I find it is a good way to record events of the day and bring history to life. The mental aspect is a balance against keeping fit, work and life in general. more…
