From The Island
John Jessup Kennan 1953 (Pomona)
The Lunatic Fringe Pride Parade
Snarled traffic, made us late
A giant ape with a hostage
Was climbing the Empire State
Everybody stopped to watch
Some filmed it on their cells
The streets have never been the same
Since that giant monkey fell
Blondes are scarce out on Skull Island
To be sacrificial recruits
They whisper she's not a real blond
But nobody knows her roots
Now we're all telling blonde jokes
Even as we bleach our hair
If the roots are gray we pluck 'em out
Manage images with care
I'll take you to dizzying new heights
Think of all the stars we'll see
All the venues and the bright lights
C'mon babe, come away with me
The Lunatic Fringe Pride Parade
Was lead story on the news
But The big ape fell and stole the show
Landed on the six o'clock blues
Now the maintenance crew is all ticked off
It's mandatory overtime
And the blond escaped unscathed, of course
'Cause a story dropped stops on a dime
The script writers are all appalled
That a blonde was placed In harm's way
The Guild has released a statement
In complete support of Fay Wray
Nobody's happy with the script
The perpetrator has been banned
They stripped him of his Guild card
Banished him to foreign lands
I'll take you to dizzying new heights
Think of all the stars we'll see
All the venues and the bright lights
C'mon babe, come away with me
It's dreary on the island now
Nothin' much to do or say
She ain't you, but she'll have to do
Since they took my natural blond away
So here's to Lunatic Fringe Pride
To costumed clowns who drink in sync
A toast to monkeys on the loose
And Lady Clairol in the sink
