Well Worn Out
John Jessup Kennan 1953 (Pomona)
Was I the mask that you applied
To convince them who you really are?
Or maybe I'm the pads you wore
To keep your knees from getting scarred?
Was I extracurricular
Thong panties for expedience?
Did you wear me as a mouthpiece
On your behalf in self-defense?
Did you see me as a Kevlar vest
To keep you bulletproof
To defend you and protect you
Regardless of the truth?
Was I the gownn of elegance
In the ballroom of the chic
Or just some glossy lipstick
You left on someone else's cheek?
Cast from part-time wardrobe hell
Discount love
For her to wear
A bargain there
Fits like a glove
She wears me very well
Life is just your walk-in closet
We're all accessories
Worn as seldom as you like
Discarded as you please
Maybe every other week
Maybe twice a year
Till you wear out our welcome
Salvation Army free and clear
Ticking with arrhythmia
On closet floors inside your store
Was I the time worn on a watch
That runs exclusively on yours?
Was I the sacrificial robe
That kept you set apart
At the altar on your knees
Offering up another heart?
She doesn't have a wardrobe
Kept under lock and key
Likes the naked comfort
The comfort of reality
Her wardrobe isn't crowded
I dress for her, and she for me
My heart ticks in perfect time
On her watch exclusively
Cast from part-time wardrobe hell
Discount love
For her to wear
A bargain there
Fits like a glove
She wears me very well
