Wind And Bell
John Jessup Kennan 1953 (Pomona)
I was twelve years old
When the fall came down
Whispered through hollow
An' leaves got up an' danced
A solitary church chime sound
A lonely harmony with wind
Echoed and echoed through me
Felt like quiet romance
A solitary bell
In a hollow wind
Always felt alone
No matter where I been
A solitary flame
In a hollow soul
Light to guide me home
To that big black hole
Long lean and thin, just skin and soul
As if it forgot its blood and bone
Solitary flame held steady
Waxing hollow and alone
Never seemed a place but now for me
Folks said you should look ahead
But there was no space I'd rather be
'Cause it seems to me you wind up dead
An' you leave it all for someone else
An' go where you're supposed to be
Until I get there, just listen for
The bell and the wind in me
A solitary bell
in a hollow wind
Always felt alone
No matter where I been
A solitary flame
In a hollow soul
Just enough light to guide me
Home to that big black hole
Candles don't flicker anymore
In the wind
You never have to find your way
Home again
No hollow solo romance
Through midnight
A big black hole filled with
Eternal Light
