Waters By The Moon
John Jessup Kennan 1953 (Pomona)
Meditation suicide sunup
Tequila sunsets on the deck
Contact high from burning martyrs
What's that hangin round your neck?
Is that some kind of crucifix,
Perhaps a noose of style and flair,
Or just another silky tie
To mesmerize the prayers?
Your eyelashes are seaweed now
Prepare for duty nonetheless
The waters of the earth turn red
Avow glory in its gory mess
With your plastic plasma warriors
Sip Bloody Marys on the dunes
Think you're gonna turn the tide
As if you control the moon
Someone went off the balcony
The witnesses aren't gonna spill
Go, point your pointless weapons
Slug your fill of a bloody swill
Go, enrapture swordfish mermaids
Lure them to your waterbeds
If you feel like you're drowning
It's just the blood inside your head
When the haunts all come to visit
Through the portals in your cell
Bringing seaweed from the edges
Of stories they have yet to tell
And someone's reading you your rights
Or last rites, as the case may be
Remember the mermaid's tale
When your blood becomes their sea
