The Way of Wisdom
Richard Newton Sherrer 1951 (Easton)
Wisdom has built her house,
Which has seven towers;
As she waits for her spouse,
Patiently for hours.
She has slaughtered her beast,
While mixing her wine;
Has prepared for a feast,
When her beau comes to dine.
She sends forth her maidens,
To call from high places;
The loneliness frightens,
Without his embraces.
Whoever is simple,
To let him turn in here;
As she wears her wimple,
To come and calm her fear.
For he does lack some sense,
Lacking understanding;
But is a good defense,
What life is demanding.
Come here and eat her bread,
Quench thirst and drink her wine;
Feast of what she has fed,
Being his concubine.
Exit the simple ways,
Leave the foolish and live;
For insight all your days,
So that God will forgive.
