Thought for the day

It's funny how simple occurrences
can bring back memories of the past
A favorite song or certain sight
can put you in another time
Returning to a moment in your mind
of thoughts, some happy, some sad
some you're glad happened
some you wished never had
Each memory added together
totals to this moment
Next thought is to the future
not forgetting the past
Because the past is
the beginnings of destiny

About this poem

This poem was composed for an old flame, as a Christmas gift in 1981. I had asked her what she wanted for Christmas, and she told me to write her a poem. Of course she interpreted it differently than I expected, and an explanation, and new poem were required. This poem was first published in 1996, in a compilation book "Fields of Gold"

Wow, this poem is truly beautiful and relatable! I love how it captures the essence of memories and how they can transport us back in time. Your use of language is so descriptive and vivid, it really paints a picture of the emotions that come with revisiting these moments.

One suggestion I have would be to perhaps experiment with the structure of the poem a bit more - maybe try playing around with the line breaks or adding in some rhyming elements to add an extra layer of depth to the piece. Nonetheless, your message is clear and impactful, and I'm sure it will resonate with many readers. Thank you for sharing your work!
