The Star

We follow the star.
We can’t make use of its hydrogen and helium
The mix of gases that comes together to form it
But we follow the star.

We follow the star.
It’s nuclear beauty is enchanting
Lulls us into a photonic trance
So that we don’t know better
We can’t see better
We can’t hear better
All we can do is follow.

We follow the star.
Follow it’s dazzling light
So bright that it can blind us
And it does.
And as we stagger, we still continue
To follow
Because the star is all we know

Some don’t follow the star.
Some find other beauties
Other enchanting sights
That tear them from its interest
They hide their new knowledge
Keep their discoveries to themselves

But some spread the word
Let their discoveries ripple through
The chain of star-followers
And unrest builds,
A trance
is broken

About this poem

This poem is about unrest, and rebellion from a depressive system. I based this off of a student protest that happened at my high school after a series of racist events against black teachers. Our voices needed to be heard, but we were just too afraid to let them out because of what our school forced into us. This poem shows that process, how the trance that our teachers and faculty had chained to us had been broken.
