Startlight to Startdust
Jinal Shah 2002 (Vadodara)
'Every monster needs a human',
Isn't that what they say?
But they never talk of the curse trailing;
The curse that came from loving a monster.
She had a beautiful heart, beaming with love;
A heart that gleamed with starlight.
And when I came every night, in hues of the midnight sky.
She softly illuminated every fear, every scar
Concealed in the layers of my skin.
Her glint made every demon of the monster;
The monster who I was, shrink into oblivion.
Starlight could always overcome twilight
Starlight could always give an eternal beauty to the night.
But her starlight couldn't overcome the dark in me.
She tried to change me, turn me into something more angelic.
But she forgot to merciful, perhaps she had alienated mercy
Because it hurt, oh it hurt so much more than my bruises.
She never loved what I was,
Only the idea what I could be.
So I shattered our little house of glass and left,
In the middle of the burning love, raging with fire.
And now all she could do was cares the ashes,
Pricking the shattered pieces of glass from her burnt skin
An once-unblemished skin, now flowed with stardust,
I saw she had been scarred beyond amendment
And that was when realization downed over me with an unsettling thought.
In trying to preserve human,
I had turned her into monster.
