The Return

A boy sits by the winter fire,
Waiting for his dad's return,
He's fighting far across the wire,
Lives are lost and fires burn.

No smile to be seen on his lips today,
Sadness and memories haunt his sleep,
Since the idol left that day,
Pain inside his heart sits deep.

He wishes the return comes soon,
Although he knows that times are tough,
Wishes made by stars and moon,
Feelings hard and dreams are rough.

The good news comes, he's coming back,
Waiting for the heroes' ship,
Or maybe by the railroad track,
But in the haze, his wishes slip,
"It was an unforeseen attack".

Anguish greets him once again,
Standing by the open grave,
Like his tears, it starts to rain,
War had wanted life - he gave.

Burning fires and wasted lives,
Wasted words flow from the shrives,
They waited by the railroad track,
Sorry, son - he won't be back.
