The Rich man and Lazarus
Royston 1946 (Reading)
He was rich and was dressed in a fine way
and lived in luxury every day.
At his gate a beggar named Lazarus
lay covered in sores and begging for crusts.
So poor and destitute he longed to eat
crumbs that fell from the table at his feet,
and dogs came by to lick every sore
but the rich stay rich and the poor stay poor.
When the day came and they both had to die.
Angels took Lazarus to live on high
but the fate of the rich man I’ve to tell
was to fall from grace and end up in Hell.
Down in Hell the rich mans’ torment was great
for he was thirsty and in a poor state.
“Get Lazarus to bring some water to me,”
he cried in out loud for he was so thirsty.”
In life the rich man had everything
while Lazarus was poor and had nothing.
A great chasm divides the saved and lost
in Heaven or Hell that cannot be crossed.
