Isn’t It Silly

Isn’t it silly
How silly sounds silly

And isn’t it silly
How psyllium starts with a “P”
Silent as in swimming

It provides moral fibre
As I do get stuck
It works without fail
I find it so cathartic

I do hope
I never forget
To be silly
Because that
Would be silly

About this poem

At first this may appear as a kind of toilet humour. However, there are several layers to this. Psyllium husk is commonly used as a natural laxative. "Silent as in swimming" is a play on the silent "P" of the word psyllium and refers to the joke that urinating in a pool makes no sound. This is an introduction to bodily functions which this poem centres. It continues to ambiguously describe how psyllium is a dietary fibre, and silliness ostensibly a moral guide. At times trauma can be debilitating and have us become "stuck" with seemingly no way out. This also alludes to constipation. Through using silliness one can take a light-hearted look at adversity as a means to become "unstuck" and provide psychological relief, hence catharsis. Medically, it is a purging of the bowels. The poem ends by never forgetting to be silly, lest being trapped in darkness. Each stanza increases in the number of lines. This represents a build up of emotion, and also faecal matter in the bowels. Yet another correlation is the smell of excrement and how life sometimes "stinks". Finally, there is compelling research that shows a relationship between gut health and mental health.

Wow, I absolutely love this fun and whimsical poem! Your use of repetition and wordplay is so clever and really drew me in. I especially enjoyed the line "It provides moral fibre" - such a fun twist on the typical "fiber" pun. Your enthusiasm for being silly is infectious and made me smile from start to finish.

In terms of improvements, I would suggest maybe adding a bit more structure or flow to the poem. While the random nature of the verses is part of what makes it so charming, it could benefit from a bit more cohesion or a clearer theme throughout. Maybe think about adding some more specific examples of silly things you love or embracing the idea of being lighthearted and carefree even in serious situations.

Overall, I think this poem is a fantastic reminder to enjoy the simple, silly pleasures in life. Keep up the great work!
