Childhood Home
Childhood Home
My childhood home is pictured in my mind.
Remembered words is part of what I find.
Conversations that were misunderstood.
Still most of my memories remembered as good.
There was Toots the cat, white paws & nose.
A beautiful bunny in the barn that froze.
Shep the dog, whose legs were bony,
And phantom neighbors who acted phony.
I snuck the cat in my bedroom at night.
So he purred in my ears and held me tight.
When it snowed outside, such a pretty sight.
And Mom & Dad hardly ever did fight.
On summer eves, there were fireflies galore.
Us kids caught them, to see who could catch more.
On summer days, grasshoppers jumped so far,
I'd look around & say "I wonder where you are!"
I remember pot roasts on Sunday afternoons
Visiting the candy store was never too soon.
Dressing up for church with patent leather shoes.
Then watching my family get high on booze.
Childhood's home was a mixed bag of nuts.
My brother in the woods, building forest huts.
The neighborhood boy who visited me there.
Showed me his toy & it gave me quite a scare.
Childhood home, I hold you very dear.
Though far away I roam,
In my heart you're always near.
Sometimes when I think of you, I shed a little tear.
Yes , I always return to my childhood home.
I keep her in my heart no matter where I roam.
Her circular driveway, enormous front yard.
Whenever I go there, I can't let down my guard.
Amazing turkey dinners on Thanksgiving day.
I always return, though it's so far away.
My own TV, in the big fancy den;
Watching 'Lost In Space'since I was age 10.
Lake Superior or Lake Michigan,
I hope one day, I will see them both again.
Snow-covered roads, snow plows all around.
I even miss the ice cream shop in my little town.
About this poem
This poem came about due to recurring dreams of my childhood home. I thought if I captured my childhood home in a poem, then it would stop haunting me. Here I have shared the highlights, and it has stopped my recurring dreams. I think my childhood home just wanted some recognition. So here it is ladies & Gentlemen...
