Platonic

We want to make love become a great endeavor
While enforcing rules of emotional sustenance.
We carry loads of obligations and conformity
Hoping others might think we've got magical potions.

Were we taught that it should be
Rock solid with no doubt or dismay.
They built us tolerant and abrasive.
Missing detail, consciousness, or grace.

Love's jagged, rocky, mountains melt beneath
Our feet yet, at each turn a bigger stone.
Both of us decided it was not acceptable to be
Unhappy, despondent, or alone.

Love's stony base was fragmented and in mysterious Savoir-faire that had never been procured.
Yet the strong and stony foundation held it up
And there was comfort in knowing it was secured.

Togetherness is a privilege for those who come and go.
For they have travelled the callous and uneven road.
Faithfully, mapping the rugged landscape below the
Platonic foundation of which they were bestowed.

About this poem

This poem is about the underlying issues in relationships that go beneath our humble habitats and the luxury of compatibility. It's about the sometimes-stony foundation that we create and nurture to maintain commitment.
