The Toll of Insecurity
John Ishaya 1996 (Niger state)
The next
we never know
like death warrant to a prisoner
a ghost, a host an uninvited foreigner
it comes and knocks
this is how I know
It steals freedom
and gives doom
it names me paranoid
to my twin eye, it surnamed annoyed
it tears our essence
gifts fear and stench of death fragrance
A stolen esteem
shattered trust in a heartbeat system
shackled in this thought of uneasiness
a thrown dagger, a dare of humanness
no lullaby can tame this hullabaloo
knitted in minds so deep below
even the toddler could spell the word
and wished to be older in a peaceful world
where eyes will be allowed to
be in peace
and our minds at ease
without a man to call security
But insanity! Insanity it is !
That day, it was Kande
in tears we hope for her return
as it reaps sanity in an insane world
Yesterday, it was Shade
it caressed her of her dignity in the same world
the other day, it was Chichi's
parents massacred in this shame world
Today, the unknown state
like death we never know
who is
The next
