The Tree’s Farewell

Jennifer Walker 1979 (Virginia)

The tree stands naked and bare
It’s beautiful lights at which I stare
The box comes in, the tree will soon come down
Not a smile on my face but a frown
The lights go off, the time is here
To bring to an end, my favorite time of year
The tree comes apart one by one
The end of the season is nearly done
Into the box each piece is put
First the sections then the foot
Good bye dear tree
I shall miss thee
You I will remember
Until you come again in November
