The Falls baths (1974)

In my Towel
bathing trunks
goggles
In my pocket
a pen knife
spare change
one Bazooka Joe
Now I’m good to go

I don’t care
that the cold
swimming pool
is always freezing
that the broken
lockers  are never
fixed
that my dirty feet
are never clean

I love it!
the noise
the bedlam
the smell
f*ck’n hell
this is bliss

I’m Jumping in
I’m diving in
I’m pissing in
I’m moving up
I’m growing up

I’m  shivering
and laughing
I’m towel smacking
and back  slapping
having such fun
that I forget  about
my ballon knot
my wet hair
I don’t care

Outside It’s raining
I’m soaked to the skin
my shoes are busted
and letting in
I’ve  enough money
for a Book of matches
2 number 6
hot soup and
pork scratchin’s

We wait at the  bus stop
drinking our hot soup
blowing on
our cold hands
smoking
our cigs through
blue  lips
then hopping a lorry
or bus
whatever comes first

We  sing out loud
Devil gate drive
and Tiger feet
all the way home
to dead end street

Watch tv until time
for bed
time to dream
Im moving up
I’m growing up

About this poem

It’s about going to the swimming baths on the Falls road in West Belfast in 1974 when I was 12 years old. Nostalgic.
