O, Your Waves
I love the way
birds sing differently
now
that I have been
to the
ocean.
My love
for the calling waves
and weighted rhythm
of the unending sea
is now
whispered
in the breath
of my love
when I adore
chirping in the trees.
My love
for the wind
playing
through branches
has undertones
of my love
for the water
playing
through itself.
I am forever changed
with every visit
to the beach.
In the same way,
I am forever
changed
having met
you.
About this poem
This could also be considered, loosely, both an ode and an elegy, in spirit. This started as a romantic outpouring to express a profound and deep love for a friends of many years. A sudden spiritual awakening caused me to realize that the subject of the last line was truly myself, too - an exercise in self-acceptance and self-love. This led to an immediate ego death (elegy), and a subsequent and greater spiritual awakening where I realized that through this, the subject of the last line was love itself, God as I understand God, life, beauty, all my friends and family, experiences, and just all things in this life that have impacted me in some way. For me, this is a deeply personal poem that ascends me to a higher purpose in life, and so even this poem itself is the subject of the last line. This is a sacred collection of poetic thoughts to me, and I am honored that you read them. I hope you enjoy. more »
