Small Towns

Small towns of the open road,
How many stories untold you hold.
I glimpse your welcome sign, I slow,
Your dusty streets evoke a glow.

What history lies behind your quaint facade?
What secrets in your creaky doors are locked?
Do tales of love and loss still resonate,
Within the walls of buildings arcane?

Amidst the verdant fields and rolling hills,
Your homely charm enchants my will.
I hear some laughter, tinkling chimes,
I smell the sweetness of the limes.

Do you recall a time when horses brayed,
And trains and carriages barreled through your spades?
Do your elders still reminisce,
Of memories too precious to dismiss?

Small towns of the open road,
I marvel at your rich abode.
Please retain your precious lore,
For us wanderers, who seek for more.

I'm just a regular, blue collar, working stiff who took an interest in writing poetry many years ago but until recently I haven't had a desire to share any with anyone or pursue publication. I'm an unpublished fork lift operator by night, and a day drinker by choice. I can be followed on Twitter @JoeStricklandSC more…
