Intrusions
Intrusions
Rooftops collapsing
And addicts relapsing
Kids underwater
With too much time passing
Mudslides and floods because of all the rain
These are the thoughts of an anxious brain
Robbers and killers lurking after sundown
Staring at airplanes waiting for the comedown
Wondering if it’s normal or are you insane?
These are the thoughts of an anxious brain
Terrorist bombings and city rooftop shootings
Midnight home invasions and criminals looting
Avoiding the skies just to get derailed on the train
These are the thoughts of an anxious brain
Flesh eating amoebas and aspirating from hiccups
Misdiagnosis from laboratory mix ups
Afraid of the bloodwork, they might blow a vein
These are the thoughts of an anxious brain
Sinkholes beneath me and acid rain from above
Contracting diseases while wearing a glove
Oblivious to the snake bite because there’s no pain
These are the thoughts of an anxious brain
Babies eating grapes that get stuck in the pharynx
Getting intubated and it pierces your larynx
Walking under a mirror as if falls out of it’s frame
These are the thoughts of an anxious brain
Running with scissors and accidentally falling
Aortic dissection and no one hears me calling
What if it’s a blood clot and not just a sprain?
These are the thoughts of an anxious brain
Trucks toppling over in the road right beside me
Being lost in a forest with nothing to guide me
What if they lose control and come into my lane?
These are the thoughts of an anxious brain
Finally getting medication to help with intrusion
Then reading the pamphlet fills you with confusion
You’ll discard the prescription and self maintain
These are the thoughts of an anxious brain…
About this poem
The anxious brain is an exhausting thing to have. Pair that with intrusive thoughts and you have a seriously debilitating cocktail.
