WEALTH OF WOODS

I SAT UNDER A TREE IN THE BLUEBELL WOOD,
AND WATCHED THE CLOUDS ROLL BY.
THE SHADOWS FLOWING OVER THE LAND,
A PICTURE OF BEAUTY TO THE EYE.
TWIGS AND LEAVES AROUND MY FEET,
AND REMAINS OF TOADSTOOLS LAY BY ME.
THROUGH THE GRASS PRIMROSES AND HOG WEED,
TO THE WOODS PATH I COULD SEE.
ALONG THE PATH IN THE BLUEBELL WOOD,
WALKED TO WERE THE BRIDGE CROSSED THE STREAM.
TOOK THE PATH MOST TRAVELED,
ALONG THE RUTS DOWN THE HILL TO A HORNBEAM.
STOOD AND LISTERNED TO THE SOUNDS
THE WOOD PIGEON ON THE WING,
CROWS WITH THEIR REPEATED SQUARK,
AND THE WIND THROUGH THE TREES MURMERING.
ONCE CAME THE SMUGGLERS THIS WAY FROM THE COAST,
EACH PATH TELLS A STORY?
KEEP THE FOREST AND WOOD SO MAN CAN ENJOY,
LET US NOT LOOSE ITS GLORY.
JEFFREY HERBERT
