What You Do For Them

“What You Do For Them”

You preach compassion
With everything you say,
Making people’s day
With the kindness you convey.

But when you look at me
I’m not sure what you see,
I’m not sure if you’d dare
Or if you even care.

Why can’t you do for me
What you do for them?
Why can’t you see through me
Like you see through them?

I’m your family, I’m your blood,
Not just some loose stick in the mud.
Sure, you claim to love and support,
But you fail to give me comfort.

You empathize so well
Or at least that’s what I hear
From someone else’s ear
Maybe once or twice a year.

They tell me how you’ve touched their heart,
How you’ve led them towards a brand new start,
And that’s not even the greatest part:
You’ve helped them feel less torn apart.

Why can’t you do for me
What you do for them?
Why can’t you see through me
Like you see through them?

I’m sure they’ll make a plaque,
Launch a compliment attack
And cut you slack
For anything you lack.

But I know plaques mean nothing to you
And you were never much for compliments,
You’d say it seldom complements
The seeds that kindness implements.

So why can’t you love me
The way you love them?
