Binding Spells and Love's Epistles: A Library's Song
"Within her chest, a tome of tales untold,
Each page inscribed with lovers brave and bold.
Though binding fraying, chapters yet unfold,
As if by magic - or so I've been told.
What epics lie between those covers, pray?
What star-crossed pairs tread those pages today?
Might Romeo and Juliet have their say?
Or Lancelot and Guinevere hold sway?
Perhaps Alexander, who for Hephaestion fell,
Has a verse in which his longing to tell.
Or Sappho, whose desire lit her like a spell,
Has lyrics locked in that library's cell.
Which mythic couples through those lines will dance?
Will Dido and Aeneas get a chance
To rewrite their tragedy's wretched advance?
Or will their story remain happenstance?
Might Solomon pen a new Song for Sheba?
Could Antony and Cleopatra's drama be reborn?
Would Tristan and Iseult's passion rage on?
All this and more within her heart's chamber
Yet I alone stand outside these closed covers
Glimpsing only hints of what within harbors
Oh, would that I could part those pages as lovers
And at last illuminate verse that forever honors
The eternal trope of you and me.
But alas, I lack the key
To unlock your anthology,
And peruse its poetry."
