To my sweet young wife
I am writing umpteen verses
And my lass dances in grace.
I am glancing at the twinkling stars
And they whisper all our secret themes.
On endless beauty doth I meditate
And I am within thy supple figure.
I am scanning the distant blues
And it is all thy blushing eyes.
I am in the vale of springs
And it brings to me thy happy embrace.
I am among the cool shades
And feel thy radiant heart.
A veil of mist now embraces me
And I am lost in thy soft kisses.
I lay in this flowing moonlight
And thy coolest spot I gently kiss.
The solemn notes of this night
Unto me whisper a tale of silken nights.
In strong, surging waves
We are tossed to blissful moments.
The last traveller is now gone
The slumbering world is preparing for bed.
Like us, the candle is now burning
And my dreams are on an endless flight.
I look out of my balcony
And see a lonesome bird on its wings.
Unto the distant dales, he is making his solemn flight
Upon his wings, he is sweeping countless dreams.
Time hath separated us
But not distances, I stress.
I am hearing your silent call,
Like the singular voices of the distant woods.
We are too young to withstand,
Pearl drops are whispering in the wind.
The candle is melting through the last phase
But my pen is yet miles to go!
Like our wandering thoughts
Moon is wandering among the clouds.
And when thou art burning within me,
The passage of this night is but one moment.

About this poem
This is an obvious moment of separation and the husband is at present thinking about his young wife in this silent hour of night. He is preparing to write a love letter in the light of a burning candle and his thoughts are portrayed in the following verses. This is one of my earliest compositions and dates back to May 1978. I was then staying in New Delhi and through this poem, I can still recall the silence and veil of that night when I composed this poem. I was a bachelor then. I was sitting on my balcony and casually watching the closing moments of the day. Leaning against the picket gate, my owner’s two daughters were engaged in a light conversation with somebody when the theme struck me. more »
