The God-Given Task
Richard Newton Sherrer 1951 (Easton)
What has the worker got to gain,
From all his toil in labor;
The agony of all the pain,
No assistance from his neighbor.
I have seen what God has given,
To the sons and daughters of man;
How busy being in Heaven,
Going according to His plan.
He made it lovely in its time,
Puts eternity in a man’s heart;
All that God has done is sublime,
That man cannot find from the start.
But there is nothing good in them.
To do good as long as they live;
Even though the Lord should condemn,
But God is willing to forgive.
Enjoy the fruit of your labor,
In all your toil take pleasure;
To eat and drink with your neighbor,
This is God’s gift you should treasure.
What God does endures forever,
Nothing was added nor taken;
What God has done will not sever,
And He has never forsaken.
That in which has been is still now.
Which is to be already been;
Although we may not know how,
God drives away what is unclean.
