What Happens Now
When the last teardrop is finally shed
When the last goodbye is said
When your body is laid to rest
What Happens Now
The kind words have all been spoken
The hugs have all been given out
There's just a few still lingering
What Happens Now
The the guest have all gone home
The last dish dried and put away
The floors all swept and the trash taken out
What Happens Now
Sadness and heartache is a constant reminder
The house is but an empty shell
I'll live for the moment, tomorrow is not here
What Happens Now
Dinner for one gets lonely
The house is now quiet and empty
Forgotten, alone, I sit and rock
What Happens Now
But for the sounds of whistling winds
The gentle drops of winter rain
No footsteps down the hall I hear
What Happens Now
When I lay me down at night to rest
I must wonder did I do my best
Did I leave any stones uncovered
What Happens Now
Perhaps this is my sentence
For deeds I should have done
Here I sit, my body broken
What Happens Now
Do I ask the Lord again
Now awaiting his response
For time is his, it is not mine
What Happens Now
About this poem
I was awakened during the night with the title and content and began writing. There is grief and sorrow and life after losing a loved one.
