The strongest souls shine brightest
When we learn to walk through pain.
There’s many scars of black and blue
When we normalize the strain.
You shit yourself as a first resort
Sobriety was, “I’ll give it a try.”
When everyone else gave up on you
I watched you drink another lie.
Who the hell was I to you back then?
Who is anyone to a drunkard’s son?
You sat there smelling like insobriety,
Now I wonder who am I to anyone?
So much gets lost between love and anger
I was screaming without a sound.
I heard you talking to yourself yet again
But you never turned the talk around.
I was too pissed off to be your crutch
I picked you up, you hit the wall.
You were twisting fates of father and son
Drinking yourself into another fall.
Then we knocked on your bedroom door
It was the hardest knock we knew --
“Come on, Pop, it’s time to get help
It’s time to cut ties with the brew.
You fought tooth and nail like a child
“I don’t want to go to rehab.”
We aren’t asking dammit, this is it,
The time has come to pay your tab.
Thirty-one days re-learning to crawl
Six months more unliving your past --
A lifetime learning to stand up tall,
Do or die because this is your last.
