Voices from the Barn

Richard Groff 1957 (Pottstown, Pa.)

He watches the little people
As they try to figure out
The reason they were put here
And what it’s all about.

God has his own agenda!
And his plans cannot be stopped.
He’s working out there in the fields;
He’s raising up a crop.
Out there in the fields
The chaff is fixed so there it stays.
But when the heads of grain are crushed
It quickly blows away.

The patient farmer waits until
The crop is fully grown.
And then he puts the sickle to it
And he takes home all he owns.
There upon the threshing floor
He separates the seeds.
Some are crushed for making bread
To meet the children’s needs.
The rest he gathers to his barn;
His wealth has multiplied.
He loves all of those who love him
And you know God never lies.
