Echoes of Sorrow : A Symphony of Struggle"

Jared Chimezie 1989 (Ebonyi state)

Every day the sun burns fierce
Sweat pours like rivers, a relentless pierce
Men's tears fall in huts of scars
Trees stand wounded, like forgotten stars
Men forced to crawl, like babes undone
Trod upon, their voices drowned in the sun

Onions sting the eyes, cries unspoken
Ears deaf to warnings, hearts rocked and broken
Men bear the brunt of seen and unseen hands
Planting tears like peppers in their lands
Clouded minds blame those in white
Mute tongues laud their own desperate fight
Ancestral guilt weighs heavy, sold without remorse
Taught to clash with the divine, a cruel discourse

About this poem

The poem begins with an intense portrayal of the physical and emotional pain endured by the men in a society that has oppressed them. The comparison of sweating faces to "a jumping hot waters" and men crying like babies in "scarring hut" sets a tone of agony and helplessness. The imagery of trees staggering like wounded tigers adds to the sense of a wounded and struggling community. The poet underscores the dehumanizing treatment of these men, highlighting how they are made to crawl and trodden upon, stripped of their dignity. The reference to onions stinging the eyes and cries remaining unspoken further emphasizes the suppression of their voices and emotions. As the poem progresses, it delves into the consequences of historical injustices and ongoing struggles faced by this community. The lines about planting tears like peppers in their lands and the blame placed on others while celebrating their own perceived fight reflect a cycle of suffering and misplaced prid
