The Promise

THE PROMISE

Except that ye become as one,
God’s will on earth cannot be done.
Did we not take a marriage vow?
And with these rings said, “I thee wed
‘Till death doth part”, these words we said,
A promise made for then….and now!

And through all sickness and in health,
Through good, the bad, in need, or wealth,
Did we not say these words before?
And what’s a promise when it’s not kept?
If truth is lost, love’s just a debt.
If we said nothing, we’d have more!

And what of the promise to our children?
We've gouged the hope right from their eyes,
We've stolen smiles right off their faces,
We've taught them trust, then gave them lies.

When love in marriage reigns supreme,
Seasons change, still, love is green,
And no one ever says, “Goodbye”.
But when the will in love is dead,
It makes no difference what is said,
Time will see the promise die.

For every vow that we may break,
Another promise, let us make,
Let’s not see these children cry.
Let’s see them through both bad and good,
Let’s be there, just as we should,
Thus, not a single word will die!

Let this be our promise to our children:
We’ll put the hope back in your eyes,
We’ll put smiles back on your faces,
We promise love,
We’ll never leave,
We’ll never lie!
