A Wish

I did not wish upon that star.
I expressed that I did,
Deceiving intentionally.
Never believing in fulfilled dreams
Or the ability of wishes to come true.
That star,
Brilliantly shining,
possessed me with the desire to assent.
Wanting,
Yearning to believe
That the spark in your eyes
Was more than lustful desire,
Was love.
Still I hesitated,
Consumed with feelings of doubt,
The unmistakable woman's intuition.
And somehow I knew
That a simple wish,
Upon a single star,
Would be the cause of my broken heart
And my troubled mind.
So I refused to make that wish
And as I sit here crying,
Trying to put back together
The pieces of my broken heart,
I wish - that I had.
