Big Ben
Joel Hegeman 1977 (Jacksonville, FL)
Big Ben was old, well past his time,
He was trying to regain the form he had in his prime.
He had been struggling for months to get in a groove,
he kept on going for he felt he had something to prove.
He no longer cared about money or the all-star team,
he was out there now to continue living his dream.
His team was good, the best in the league,
they made it to the World Series with two clean sweeps.
He didn’t pitch in all that time,
the manager didn’t want him giving up the lead in the ninth.
The series was close and came down to the end,
game 7 ninth inning no one left to pitch but Big Ben.
He took the mound and got two quick outs,
then gave up three walks in a row and heard the shouts.
“Take him out!” he could hear the home crowd yell,
then he heard a voice say, “Hey Ben, go to hell!”
He knew if he gave up another walk his team wouldn’t win,
so he took a deep breath and started throwing strikes again.
One strike, Two strikes Ben was far ahead,
then he threw three balls in a row and thought he was dead.
With one last effort he reared back and threw,
the batter swung and right by him it flew.
Big Ben had done it though he scared everyone there,
but once the game was over no one seemed to care.
Big Ben retired and returned home to his wife,
he had fulfilled his dream he had all his life.
