The Colour of Mankind
Rahimeen Lodhi 2005 (Toronto)
We don’t even realise,
What society has become.
We all are just trying to survive,
But our hearts have gone numb.
We turn a blind eye,
To other’s suffering and pain.
Deaf to the helpless who cry,
Greed engulfed us like a hurricane.
False promises falling like rain,
Brother against brother - dying in vain,
Humanity behind bars and held under the chain,
All this hate left a bloodstain.
Hopes and dreams flushed down the drain,
The evil desires of people we can’t contain,
Yet we can’t do anything but complain.
All this is driving mankind insane.
Only by being tanned,
Are you made an outcast.
Making life like quicksand
Or a fatal bomb in full blast.
The colour of his shield
That is protecting his heart,
Doesn’t matter on the battlefield,
When fighting a war he didn’t start.
Imagine putting many under threat,
Because of the spread of this destructive mindset,
Leaving thousands submerged in a sea of regret,
Fading away like a burnt cigarette.
The vicious cycles of hatred is a lost bet,
And so they fell prey to a life long debt.
These beads formed from their own sweat,
Around their collar is a necklace of fret.
We bleed the same colour,
We breathe the same air,
The value of life doesn’t get smaller,
Just because society doesn’t play fair.
The colour of our skin
Doesn’t define our place,
It’s what shines from within,
Not the hue of our face.
To ponder of the injustice against our kind,
How many more fallen soldiers and injured souls
Do we need to sacrifice to leave this horror behind,
Just to break free from bigotry’s controls?
